Sacred Cow #6: Mormons don’t perform human sacrifices

I was reading in Jeremiah this week at Church (yes, I know. The New Testament is the one being taught in Sunday School.  I will repent for not sticking to the “program”)  and came across a really interesting scripture in Jeremiah about human sacrifice.  It struck me, many (if not all) of us are doing this (in one way or another) today!

Sacred Cow #5: It’s too late

Nothing pleases Satan more than the attitude that “It’s too late” or “It is ‘prophecy’ so there is nothing we can do”.  This attitude takes Satan’s most powerful enemy’s (holders of the Priesthood) out of the picture.

This has been a prevalent lie spread amongst the followers of Christ for decades and has been refuted by leaders of Christ’s church as a lie from Satan.

Sixth: ‘Don’t worry,’ says the devil ‘the Lord will protect you, and besides the world is so corrupt and heading toward destruction at such a pace that you can’t stop it, so why try.’ Well to begin with, the Lord will not protect us unless we do our part. But many of the prophecies referring to America’s preservation are conditional. That is, if we do our duty we can be preserved, and if not then we shall be destroyed. This means that a good deal of the responsibility lies with the priesthood of this Church as to what happens to America and as to how much tragedy can be avoided” Ezra Taft Benson, General Conference April 1965

Here we learn that it is a lie from Satan that you can’t stop the destruction of freedom, and it’s a lie that we should not try.  We learn that our preservation as a people and as individuals depends on what we try and do, and that what happens is either because of or the fault of the action (or lack thereof) of Priesthood holders.

In fact, “The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ it will be necessary to “destroy the secret works of darkness” in order to preserve the land of Zion” the Americas. (2 Nephi 10:11–16.) – Ezra Taft Benson, General Conference, Sept. 1961

The FACT is the conspiracy to destroy freedom will be destroyed in America BEFORE Christ comes again.  The only question that remains is; will you do your part or will you stand on the side lines as an enemy to the plan of God?

Sacred Cow #4: We must support LDS candidates

With the myriad of LDS people in the public spotlight in recent years, I have heard the idea more and more often that we must support LDS candidates simply because they are LDS, for as one commenter said, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Is this really sound logic? Perhaps proponents of this idea would say that Christ taught we should be “one”, and that if we “are not one, we are not His”.

Sacred Cow #3: Dead prophet = not a prophet

In 1980, Ezra Taft Benson gave the oft quoted talk “Fourteen Fundamentals of Following the Prophet” wherein he states,

“The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet”

Clearly the living oracle of the Lord is going to be able to give us the most relevant information that the people of God will need to hear at any given moment in time.  Clearly, there is no need for us to prepare for a worldwide flood by building an ark any more than there was a need for Noah’s family to be worried about internet predators.

However, many members of the Church have used this principle to put a metaphorical “expiration date” on the words of the Lord through His Prophet, making the assertion that if the current Prophet doesn’t speak about a certain topic, it is automatically void, or of little to no importance.

This is dangerous reasoning indeed.  Taken to its logical conclusion, this would lead one to seal their scriptures…  Read the rest at The Mormon Chronicle

Sacred Cow #2: President Benson “mellowed” after becoming Church President

It is a common assertion, in an attempt to discredit any of his teachings, that President Benson “mellowed” on his teachings against Conspiracy and in defense of liberty.  They claim that he did not teach those things once he became President of the Church and therefore he must have changed his views, making his old views null and void.

This idea is one that is not only prevalent amongst more statist members of the Church, but also among many that consider themselves liberty lovers.

Sacred Cow #1: Obey the law of the land… no matter what?

The 12th article of faith states, “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”

Many today have interpreted this to mean that it is a part of our faith that we are to obey any and all governmental laws and regulations no matter their compatibility with the laws of of God.

However, this paradigm does not take into account the Lords definition of law, as well as precedence set by ancient as well as modern (including the author of said article) Prophets…

Mmmmm, sacred cows…

This blog is dedicated to debunking sacred cows and bringing to light the “hidden things of darkness”.

What is a sacred cow?  My definition is anything that is believed based only on tradition, and has little to zero basis on actual fact. These beliefs are held so strongly that the “worshiper” declares “blasphemy!” to anyone that challenges said belief.

For example, many believe that the Church has always been “politically neutral” and has never spoken out on anything except for “moral” issues (abortion, gay marriage, etc.).

I plan on “eating” that sacred cow and many others. Mmmm… sacred cows taste good.

leave a comment if you have any you would like covered, and I will see what I can do.

I hope this is as fun for you as it is for me!
